Pacman Bags It AGAIN!

16 03 2008

Manny Pacquiao is the new WBC super featherweight title holder.  According to him, “the business is over.”  The fight that was four years in the making was awesome.  It was a close call.  I thought the best case scenario was a draw because I’ve always been bad with Math but hey, it’s another reason to celebrate again!

Pacman’s fight has always stopped the clock for the Filipinos.  No rally, no traffic jam, almost zero crime rate, a ceasefire between the rebel groups and the armed forces.  Celebrities flock to Vegas.  Phenomenal.  Even the politicians don’t mind looking like fools trying to raise whatever part of Manny’s body in the ring for photo op!  And they cross party lines for that.  God knows how much campaign money they earned from that bout.  I’m sure it was more than enough to ensure a win since Juan Manuel’s Marquez’s great strategy and play made bets soar to unthinkable proportions.

Way to go, Pacman!

After this welcome respite from all the woes that life has to offer, we can get back to business.  It’s only Pacman’s business with Marquez that’s over.  Not ours.  For now, let’s get ready to PARTY!

friends and countrymen, let’s just be merry and be glad. let’s not make war. the opponent lost enough although to give him credit, it was really a fight well fought. it was even a close call for pacman. four years ago, he was a bomb who took on the dynamite with a strong fist. since then he has evolved into a polished two-fisted warrior who played scientifically today with a stronger and hungrier dynamite. in the end, it was a sweet victory for all of us pinoys.

tama na yan, inuman na! cheers everyone!

Hi Comrade Iamsorceress,

It is enough that Pacquiao was declared the winner. He received more blows than he was able to deliver and the pundits are pointing to this in terms of a per round scoring. Thus, including the knockdown, in their count – Marquez should have won.

They even argue that because Marquez is bound for retirement, Pacquiao was more bankable, that’s why they gave him the win.

Truth is, boxing has always been regarded as the red light district of sports. There have been so many controversial decisions and outright “blind judgments” when the judges scorecards are sought for a winner. This particular fight is not even controversial, whoever was declared winner.

To use “number of punches landed” assuming they were all power shots, as a basis for the round points is a logical approach, but not always an appropriate one. Despite delivering his best, Marquez could not floor Pacquiao. Pacquiao gave his best, and it floored Marquez. Even if you hit me 10 times but I’m still lucid and standing, while I hit you once and you fall on your butt; who shall be declared winner? It’s not just the number of punches or how powerful these are; but it’s how much impact it had on the opponent.

The other fact is, there really is no winner in such a fight. I believe each one received tremendous damage after the event, and moving to a higher division for heavier and more damaging punishment is not a good career move. This is a bigger problem, the hangers on who are his mushrooms would want him to continue so they can feed on him. If he’s out of the limelight, there is no reason for them to hang around. These are the people who will lead him to an early appointment with St Peter. –Durano, done!

Amen!

It was a lesson in humility for Pacman. A lesson in reality for us amateur sports events viewers. Boxing opened the doors for game fixing and the mafia. While things are not THAT huge anymore, they still aren’t totally out of the picture. But it was a really good game. One of the best Pacquaio matches. A rematch is a must. For integrity, for bigger bets, for total entertainment.

The only problem with Pacman is that he hangs out with the wrong company like Chavit Singson, Mikey Arroyo, Lito Atienza. All are corrupt Trapos who will not be a good influence to Manny’s career.

They are all gamblers too, which is really bad!

Boxing is a sport long associated with gambling. Even the term game fixing traces part of its roots to boxing. The organized crimes had a hand in the old fights, and god knows what else. I’m not saying it’s still there but we will never know, will we? After all, we’re just here to have fun. Unless we start betting, now that’s another story. —iamsorceress
